Michigan Sues Trump Administration Over Title X Funding Conditions
Michigan has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding federal funding provided under Title X of the federal Public Health Service Act. This funding is crucial in offering reproductive healthcare services to low-income individuals, covering a range of services such as STI treatments, cancer screenings, and fertility care.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has introduced new conditions for receiving these grants, including the cessation of inclusion programs, reduced access to hormonal birth control, and promoting discussions on marriage and family planning. These conditions align with the priorities of the current administration.
Michigan, along with 23 other predominantly Democratic-led states, has challenged these new requirements, citing them as arbitrary and an overreach of federal authority. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed her commitment to fighting against these conditions that could impact vital services in the state.
Nessel’s office has been actively involved in legal actions against the federal government, with over 60 cases initiated since President Trump took office. Critics have accused Nessel of using her position for political motives, but she argues that her actions have safeguarded over $3.4 billion in federal funds for Michigan that were at risk.
Despite these developments, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
