Trump Renames Lake Ontario to “Lake America” Amid Trade War

Trump Renames Lake Ontario to “Lake America” Amid Trade Tensions

In a bold move, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday renaming Lake Ontario to be known as “Lake America” in the United States. This decision comes amidst escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada, with both countries imposing hefty tariffs on each other’s goods.

The president directed the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service, emphasizing his authority in recognizing geographic places and landmarks within the country. However, Trump cannot enforce this change on Canada, which shares borders with the U.S. along multiple Great Lakes.

Trade War Escalation

Trump’s decision to rename the lake follows the U.S.’s imposition of 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after failed negotiations between the two countries. In response, Canada retaliated by imposing tariffs on American steel, dairy products, appliances, and farm equipment.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed the prospect of the name change as mere “rhetoric,” while the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney remained silent on the matter.

Historical and Indigenous Significance

The name “Lake Ontario” originates from the Huron Indigenous people’s word “oniatarí:io,” meaning “lake of shining waters.” The province of Ontario, established in 1867, derived its name from the lake.

Despite the historical and cultural significance of the existing name, Trump justified his decision by stating, “Canada’s been ripping us off for a long time” on trade and military matters. He reiterated his stance that Canada should not be treated as a state, emphasizing the need for fair trade practices.

Potential Future Changes

Trump’s move to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” echoes his previous decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” The president hinted at potential future changes, suggesting that the names of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans could also be reconsidered in the future.

With this latest development, Trump’s efforts to assert American identity over geographic landmarks demonstrate his administration’s stance on trade relations and national sovereignty.
