Michigan Governor Calls for Unity in State of the State Address

Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the importance of bipartisanship in her recent State of the State address, urging both Democrats and Republicans to work together despite the divided government in Lansing. This address marked Whitmer’s first since Republicans gained control of the state House, ending the Democrats’ trifecta control.

During her 52-minute speech, Whitmer outlined several key policy priorities, including affordable housing, addressing the education gap between young men and women in pursuing advanced degrees, and securing long-term funding for roads. She stressed the need for Michigan to exude confidence and kindness, calling for unity in a time of national division.

While Whitmer did not directly mention her proposal for a marijuana tax to fund roads, she did advocate for a tax on vaping products to generate revenue and deter younger consumers. However, disagreements arose regarding road funding, with Republicans rejecting new taxes and promoting the redirection of existing funds.

House Speaker Matt Hall expressed opposition to new taxes, instead advocating for the elimination of business-attraction subsidies to reallocate funds for infrastructure projects. Conversely, House Minority Leader Ranjeev Puri highlighted areas of potential agreement between the parties, emphasizing the importance of addressing costs, boosting the economy, and delivering tangible results for the state.
