Slovakia Seeks to Expand Its F-16 Fleet Amid Sovereignty Concerns
In a strategic move to bolster its defense capabilities, Slovakia is negotiating with the United States to acquire an additional four F-16 fighter jets. This purchase would complement the 14 aircraft already ordered, as confirmed by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
During a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on February 15, Fico emphasized the importance of the deal in reducing Slovakia’s dependence on neighboring countries for air-policing operations. He stated, “There’s an interest to increase numbers to 18 fighter jets, and now we’re discussing the topic about how to get four more of the planes to our armed forces because … it’s not a good sign of sovereignty that our airspace is protected by planes of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland,” according to a statement from the State Department.
Fico pointed out that Slovakia’s current situation is partly due to previous military equipment donations to Ukraine. Between 2022 and 2023, the Slovak government provided 13 outdated Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters as part of its support for Ukraine amidst the Russian invasion. More details on this donation can be found here.
The decision to transfer these aircraft has been contentious, with Fico and Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák voicing strong opposition and urging local prosecutors to investigate the matter. However, the Bratislava regional prosecutor’s office recently concluded that the donation was lawful.
Slovakia’s initial order for 14 F-16 Block 70/72 fighters, comprising 12 single-seat and two twin-seat models, was formalized in a 2018 contract with Lockheed Martin. The production of these units wrapped up in December 2025, as Slovakia continues to advance its defense capabilities.
