Immigrants and Pro-Immigration Policies Vital for Michigan’s Economic Growth
Michigan’s economic prosperity hinges on immigrants and supportive immigration policies, according to a recent report by the Michigan League for Public Policy (MLPP). The state’s economy heavily relies on immigrants to fill labor gaps and sustain various sectors.
Scott Preston, a senior policy analyst at MLPP, emphasized the critical role immigrants play in Michigan’s economy. He highlighted that the state’s population growth largely depended on immigrants, accounting for nearly 60% of the increase between 2012 and 2022.
Immigration’s Impact on Michigan’s Economy
Michigan has been grappling with a population decline for the past three decades, ranking second-to-last nationally. This decline has significant repercussions on the state’s labor force, tax base, social safety nets, and political representation, as outlined in the report.
Immigrants in Michigan contribute significantly to various industries, with 14% in auto manufacturing, 28% in the medical field as physicians, and 30% in software development. Additionally, immigrants are more likely to start businesses compared to native-born citizens, injecting approximately $2.5 billion in state and local taxes to support Michigan’s economy.
Policy Recommendations for Immigration Growth
The MLPP report proposed several policy measures to foster immigration growth and workplace integration in Michigan. These include reducing barriers for driver’s licenses, supporting H1-B visas, enhancing language access, improving training and education programs, facilitating credential transfer equivalency processes, and providing essential services like child care, transportation, and English as a second language.
Furthermore, creating a more welcoming environment by halting mass deportation campaigns at the local level and repealing 287G agreements, which involve local police in federal immigration enforcement, could attract and retain immigrant talent in the workforce, according to Preston.
While the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency prioritizes border security and immigration system integrity, the focus on immigration enforcement remains crucial for national safety and well-being, as stated by ICE.
