Michigan Senator Slotkin Supports Legislation to Counter China’s Critical Minerals Monopoly

The Push for Strategic Critical Minerals Reserve Legislation

Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin has voiced her support for bipartisan legislation that aims to establish a Strategic Critical Minerals Reserve. This move comes as a response to the growing concern over the United States’ reliance on China for critical minerals, essential components of various technologies.

What are Critical Minerals?

Critical minerals are natural elements vital for national defense and economic security. These minerals play a crucial role in the production of everyday items like smartphones and missiles. However, China currently holds a significant monopoly over the supply chain of these essential minerals, raising concerns about potential economic coercion.

The Proposed Legislation

The proposed legislation seeks to create a Strategic Resilience Reserve (SRR), which would function similarly to the Federal Reserve. The SRR would be tasked with ensuring a stable supply and market for critical minerals, focusing on domestic production, recycling, and competitive markets. The goal is to reduce dependence on China and safeguard the nation’s economy and security.

In a statement, Senator Slotkin emphasized the importance of the legislation, stating, “This is an important step to ensure China or other hostile nations never have a veto over our national security or our economy.” Slotkin, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has been a vocal advocate for addressing the critical minerals supply chain issue.

Prior Efforts and Future Steps

Senator Slotkin previously co-sponsored the Permit Reform in Mining for Energy and Defense Act, aiming to streamline federal permitting for critical defense and energy projects. Additionally, she has highlighted the need for the United States to stockpile critical minerals, emphasizing the importance of securing the nation’s supply chain.

With bipartisan support for the legislation, efforts are underway to establish a Strategic Critical Minerals Reserve that would bolster domestic production, reduce reliance on China, and enhance national security.
