The Enduring Legacy of the B-52 Bomber in Modern Warfare
Since its inaugural flight in 1952, the Boeing B-52 has been a steadfast presence in various military conflicts, including Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror. Most recently, it has been utilized in operations against Iran.
As part of Operation Epic Fury, initiated on February 28, U.S. forces have targeted 2,000 sites in Iran. The operation involves the use of B-1 Lancer and B-52 Stratofortress bombers, according to a report from U.S. Central Command on Tuesday morning. B-1 Lancers and B-52s have been instrumental in these aerial assaults.
The B-52 is a long-range, heavy bomber capable of potentially becoming the first military aircraft to serve for a century. As of Sunday night, U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers executed deep strikes into Iran. Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, briefed reporters at the Pentagon on Monday, stating that these actions, targeting ballistic missile sites and command centers, have secured “local air superiority.”
“This air superiority will not only enhance the protection of our forces but also allow them to continue the work over Iran,” Caine explained.
On Tuesday, U.S. Central Command confirmed on X that an assembly of B-52s, often referred to as “Stratosaurus” due to their age, was deployed to strike ballistic missile and command control posts.
The B-52H can operate at high subsonic speeds and altitudes up to 50,000 feet. It is equipped to carry both nuclear and precision-guided conventional weapons, with a payload capacity of about 70,000 pounds, including bombs, mines, and missiles, as stated by the Air Force.
Initiated on April 15, 1952, the prototype YB-52 Stratofortress was recognized as America’s first all jet-engine intercontinental strategic bomber, according to historian Carl O. Schuster.
The design by Boeing, noted for its lightweight, simple yet durable airframe with significant internal space, has allowed for upgrades well into the 21st century. The B-52D variant was the most prevalent during the Vietnam War, becoming a cornerstone of the U.S. strategic bomber force.
The B-52’s pivotal role in Vietnam included missions during Operation Linebacker II, where bombers were deployed for 11 days in December 1972 to devastate Hanoi and Haiphong, compelling North Vietnam to resume peace negotiations, as historian Stephen Wilkinson recounts.
Throughout its service, the B-52 has maintained a continuous operational presence. During a Pentagon briefing about Operation Epic Fury on Wednesday, Caine, alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, disclosed that the U.S. has struck over 2,000 targets in Iran, also destroying more than 20 Iranian naval vessels.
