This sentiment is exemplified by the extraordinary acts of seven military service members who have been recognized for their exceptional bravery and dedication by the United Service Organizations (USO) for 2026. Each honoree exemplifies the commitment to service that transcends the call of duty.
The USO Honors Exceptional Military Service
The USO recently announced its 2026 Service Members of the Year, acknowledging seven individuals from various military branches whose actions have significantly impacted both military and civilian lives. These honorees will be celebrated at the annual USO Gala on April 16 at The Anthem in Washington, D.C.
Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Michael Linnington, CEO of the USO, expressed, “The USO Service Members of the Year have shown remarkable commitment to protecting and serving others, often stepping in during critical moments for both fellow troops and civilians.”
USO Soldier of the Year: Army Capt. Emily Malcom
In the aftermath of catastrophic flash flooding in her hometown of Kerrville, Texas, U.S. Army Capt. Emily Malcom, stationed at Fort Bliss, took emergency leave to aid in the recovery efforts. Her leadership in organizing dive teams and coordinating with local agencies was crucial in the relief operations.
“As both an Army Reservist and law enforcement officer, Malcom personifies selfless service in multiple uniforms,” noted the USO.
USO Marine of the Year: Lance Cpl. Matthew Garcia
Lance Cpl. Matthew Garcia, stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., demonstrated heroism by rescuing a fellow Marine caught in treacherous surf without any life-saving equipment. His quick actions ensured the Marine’s safety, embodying the Marine Corps’ motto, Semper Fidelis.
USO Sailor of the Year: Navy Chief Petty Officer Joseph Hawthorne
During a recovery mission in Lithuania, Chief Petty Officer Joseph Hawthorne faced life-threatening conditions to retrieve the bodies of four soldiers after a training accident. His perseverance under extreme conditions exemplified Navy courage and sacrifice.
USO Airman of the Year: Staff Sgt. Theodore Dudley
Staff Sgt. Theodore Dudley saved 14 lives during a fire in his apartment building by guiding residents to safety and providing critical information to authorities. His vigilance led to the apprehension of a suspected arsonist.
USO Guardian of the Year: Master Sergeant David Gudgeon
Space Force Master Sgt. David Gudgeon responded to two medical emergencies, saving lives through quick and decisive action. His leadership extends to training and mentoring future Space Force personnel.
USO Coast Guardsman of the Year: Yeoman Second Class Cody Dmochowski
Yeoman Second Class Cody Dmochowski provided life-saving aid to a motorcycle accident victim and continued to support the individual and their family post-incident, showcasing compassion and dedication beyond the call of duty.
USO National Guardsman of the Year: Master Sgt. Jon Osterhout
Master Sgt. Jon Osterhout led a maintenance team in Saudi Arabia under hostile conditions, ensuring operational success and safety. His contributions to training and leadership have had a lasting impact on the Air Force community.
“Beyond the fight, he [Osterhout] dedicated personal time to strengthening the force,” the USO stated, highlighting his role in mentoring future leaders.
