Air Force Special Ops Chief Master Sgt. Removed Amid Investigation
The Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is undergoing a significant leadership change as its top enlisted airman, Chief Master Sgt. Anthony Green, has been removed from his role. This decision comes as an investigation into Green’s conduct is initiated, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his departure.
Lt. Gen. Mike Conley, the commander of AFSOC, relieved Green from his duties citing a “loss of confidence in his ability to fulfill his duties,” as per an email sent to personnel. This email, which was later verified for its accuracy by AFSOC, was shared on the unofficial “Air Force amn/nco/snco” Facebook page.
Conley expressed that the decision was not made lightly. “I want to assure you that this decision was made only after careful consideration of the circumstances,” Conley stated. He emphasized the importance of upholding the high standards of conduct expected from airmen, saying, “Upholding these standards is non-negotiable, and maintaining good order and discipline is fundamental to who we are.”
While the nature and timing of the investigation into Green remain undisclosed, AFSOC spokesperson Lt. Col. Becky Heyse confirmed that the inquiry is ongoing. She also highlighted that Conley is focused on ensuring the welfare of all AFSOC airmen.
AFSOC is a significant branch within the Air Force, consisting of roughly 21,000 airmen across 10 operational wings and two special operations groups. As the command chief, Green played a crucial role in advising Lt. Gen. Conley on various aspects including the readiness and training of enlisted airmen.
Green’s career in the Air Force began in 1995. He assumed the position of AFSOC command chief in May 2023 and has extensive experience, including roles as a maintenance technician and a flying crew chief. His previous assignments include serving as the senior enlisted leader for U.S. Special Operations Command in Florida and as command chief for several units such as the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey.
