Mayor Sheffield Implements Bold Changes in Detroit
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield has wasted no time in making significant changes since taking office, marking a new era for the city. In her recent State of the City address at Mumford High School, Sheffield highlighted several groundbreaking policies she has already implemented.
Addressing Violence and Affordable Housing
One key initiative is the establishment of a department dedicated to addressing violence without police involvement. Additionally, Sheffield signed an executive order mandating that 100% of proceeds from the sale of commercial property in the city go into Detroit’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund. This move is expected to inject an extra $4 million this year alone into affordable housing development and preservation efforts.
Free Bus Rides for Students
Starting immediately, all students attending Detroit’s public and charter K-12 schools can ride city buses for free by presenting a student ID. This initiative aims to improve access to transportation for students across the city.
Livable Wage and Corporate Challenge
Mayor Sheffield also signed an executive order to ensure that every city worker receives a livable wage. She issued a challenge to Detroit’s corporate leaders and employers, urging them to follow suit and provide their workers with fair compensation.
Rx Kids Program Expansion
Detroit has become the largest city in the country participating in the Rx Kids program, which provides financial assistance to mothers, infants, and expectant parents. Over 1,200 applications have been approved so far, with $1.6 million distributed to support Detroit families.
Building Detroit’s Future Block by Block
Sheffield emphasized a vision of building Detroit’s future one neighborhood at a time, highlighting the importance of investing in communities beyond the downtown area. She reassured residents that the city is committed to providing more housing and opportunities for families, signaling a shift towards comprehensive neighborhood development.
In conclusion, Mayor Sheffield’s proactive approach and innovative policies demonstrate a commitment to revitalizing Detroit and ensuring a brighter future for all residents.
