Arizona Attorney General Introduces New Civil Rights Advisory Council
In a bid to uphold civil rights advocacy in Arizona, Attorney General Kris Mayes has announced the formation of a new civil rights advisory council within her office. This initiative comes after the state Legislature decided to disband a similar advisory board earlier this year.
The previous advisory board, established approximately six decades ago, was a bipartisan effort by Republicans and Democrats to collaborate with the civil rights division. The board was instrumental in addressing critical issues such as hate crimes, fair housing, and accessibility. However, the recent legislative decision led to its dissolution.
Attorney General Mayes emphasized the importance of the board’s mission in a statement, asserting that “the board’s work is too important to go unfinished,” and reiterated her office’s dedication to preserving its legacy. Although the members of the newly formed civil rights council have not been disclosed, the initiative signals a continued commitment to civil rights advocacy in the state.
