The Targaryen Family Saga Expands in “House of the Dragon”
The Targaryens are back and as complicated as ever in the third season of “House of the Dragon,” the prequel to the iconic “Game of Thrones” series. This season dives deeper into the intricate lineage of the Targaryen family as they grapple with a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The series continues to explore the rivalry between Aegon II, King Viserys’ eldest son, and Queen Rhaenyra, his eldest daughter and chosen successor, amidst the backdrop of familial ties and dragon lore.
The Targaryen Lineage
In the first two seasons, viewers witnessed the tensions mounting as King Viserys’ death left the Iron Throne’s succession in question. Both Aegon II and Rhaenyra had already started their own families, adding new layers to the conflict. As the series progresses, the Targaryen family tree only grows more intricate with the emergence of lesser-known members reaching maturity.
Rhaenyra’s Children
Rhaenyra’s lineage includes her eldest son, Jacaerys “Jace” Velaryon, who was presumed to be fathered by Laenor Velaryon but is suspected to be the son of Harwin Strong. Jace’s life was cut short in the Battle of the Gullet during the season three premiere. Her second son, Lucerys “Luke” Velaryon, also met a tragic end alongside his dragon Arrax.
Joffrey Velaryon, the youngest son from Rhaenyra’s first marriage, is currently residing in the Vale, continuing his mother’s legacy with his dragon Tyraxes.
Alicent’s Offspring
King Viserys’ second wife, Alicent Hightower, bore him several children, starting with Aegon II Targaryen, who became king after Viserys’ death. Despite his injuries sustained at Rook’s Rest, Aegon II remains a significant player in the power struggle.
Helaena Targaryen, Alicent’s daughter, is married to her brother Aegon II and has prophetic abilities. The twin children of Aegon II and Helaena, Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, faced their own tragedies, with Jaehaerys falling victim to a violent revenge plot.
The Younger Targaryens
Aemond Targaryen, known as Aemond One-Eye, plays a pivotal role with his dragon Vhagar, while the youngest son, Daeron Targaryen, has recently entered the scene, adding further intrigue as he aligns with his cousin, Lord Ormund Hightower.
Daemon’s Lineage
Prince Daemon Targaryen’s children from his second marriage to Laena Velaryon, Baela and Rhaena, contribute to the unfolding drama. After Laena’s death, Daemon married Rhaenyra, and together they have two sons, Aegon III and Viserys II, who are currently being sheltered away from the ongoing conflict.
The Targaryen saga continues to evolve with each episode, promising more revelations and drama as the series progresses. For a complete guide to the Targaryen family tree, you can explore the comprehensive visual guide here.
