On a notable day marking the 18th anniversary of an iconic Wimbledon match, Roger Federer made a return to the revered tournament grounds. The Swiss tennis legend, known for his record eight Wimbledon singles titles, was present in the Royal Box on Monday, elegantly dressed in a brown double-breasted suit.
Federer was in attendance to witness a slate of fourth-round matches, including the game featuring rising star Alexandra Eala from the Philippines against 2024 finalist Jasmine Paolini. He also watched Grigor Dimitrov face off against wildcard Arthur Fery, a local who grew up near the All England Club, followed by a match between Alexander Zverev and Jiri Lehecka.
The day was steeped in nostalgia as it coincided with the date of Federer’s epic 2008 final loss to Rafael Nadal, a match that is often celebrated as one of the greatest in tennis history. Nadal triumphed 9-7 in the fifth set, thwarting Federer’s chance to make history with a sixth straight Wimbledon title.
This date is also significant for Federer as it marks the anniversary of his first Wimbledon victory in 2003, when he defeated Mark Philippoussis.
Federer, who secured his last Wimbledon championship in 2017, officially retired from professional tennis in 2022. The tennis icon is set to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame next month, further cementing his legacy in the sport.
Joining Federer in the Royal Box was another tennis legend, Billie Jean King, as well as 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the Formula 1 standings for Mercedes.
