Cuban Rights Group Demands Info on Missing Dissident Artist Alcántara

An outcry for clarity has emerged from Cuba as human rights advocates seek information on the fate of dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara. His supporters were left in the dark following his anticipated release from prison last week.

Cubalex, a group dedicated to providing legal aid to dissidents and documenting human rights abuses, has taken action by filing a habeas corpus petition. This legal maneuver aims to verify Alcántara’s detention status and challenge any unlawful deprivation of his freedom.

Currently, Alcántara’s allies and human rights groups remain uncertain about his precise location and legal situation, as confirmed by Cubalex. The organization, operating from outside Cuba, communicated on its X account, stating, “The relevant judicial authorities now have a legal deadline of 72 hours to issue a response. This legal action is being filed amid a critical situation of vulnerability and lack of protection.”

An inquiry for a statement was made to the Cuban government by the Associated Press, but no immediate feedback was provided.

Alcántara, aged 38, was reportedly moved from Guanajay prison shortly before his scheduled release date on July 9. His arrest dates back to July 11, 2021, when he was detained while attempting to participate in a large-scale protest against power outages. In 2022, he received a five-year prison sentence for charges related to public disorder, contempt, and disrespect for national symbols.

Internationally, organizations like Amnesty International have labeled Alcántara as a political prisoner, a designation not recognized by the Cuban government.
