In a significant judicial decision, a Brazilian Supreme Court justice has blocked a proposed meeting between former President Jair Bolsonaro and Argentina’s President Javier Milei. This decision highlights the ongoing legal ramifications facing Bolsonaro after his sentencing related to a coup attempt.
Denied Visit Request
The attempt by former President Jair Bolsonaro‘s legal team to arrange a visit from Argentine President Javier Milei has been thwarted by Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The meeting was slated for July 25 in Brasilia but was rejected on the grounds of being “political-electoral” in nature, as stated by Moraes.
Political Context
President Milei’s visit was set to coincide with the Liberal Party convention in Sao Paulo, where Bolsonaro’s son, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, is expected to be confirmed as a candidate opposing the current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Relations between Lula and Milei remain tense, with Lula historically aligned with Milei’s political opponents in Argentina.
Judicial Precedent
This isn’t the first time a request to visit Bolsonaro has been denied. In a similar decision back in March, Justice Moraes rejected a visit request from Darren Beattie, a U.S. State Department official under the Trump administration.
