Jeanine Driscoll’s Southampton Home Exempt from Tax Hike She Supported

Jeanine Driscoll

In a surprising twist in New York politics, Jeanine Driscoll, a Republican congressional candidate, is at the center of a tax controversy. Driscoll supported a property tax increase affecting her Hempstead home, while her more lavish Southampton property remained untouched by the hike.

During her tenure from 2020 to 2026 as the Hempstead Receiver of Taxes, working alongside town supervisor Don Clavin, Driscoll backed annual tax increases for Hempstead residents. Notably, in 2024, the Town of Hempstead Board approved a significant 12.1% tax levy hike, marking an additional $42.2 million in yearly revenue for the town. This increase is recorded as the largest in the town’s history since at least 2013.

While Driscoll’s Hempstead residence, valued at $1 million, was affected by the new levy, her $2 million Southampton home was exempt from this increase. This property, located outside the 4th District in New York’s 1st District, is represented by Republican Rep. Nick LaLota.

Driscoll is set to challenge incumbent Democratic Rep. Laura Gillen in the upcoming general election.
