In recent months, a Cyclospora outbreak has been reported across five states, affecting over 1,000 individuals. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. addressed the issue at a news briefing, asserting that the situation is now “under control.”

During his first public statement on the matter, Kennedy stated, “We do have the outbreak under control. We have an extensive forensics, epidemiological forensics, and we’ve identified the source of the outbreak. We and the companies that are involved have implemented a recall,” according to NBC News.

However, FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas expressed a more cautious view, indicating to Fox News that the evidence “strongly supports” Taylor Farms as the likely source.

The Cyclospora parasite causes cyclosporiasis, leading to symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, weight loss, and severe diarrhea. The FDA initially linked the outbreak to Taylor Farms’ lettuce, but later retracted this claim following a meeting with Taylor Farms executives, citing a “false positive” test result. The agency had first suggested Taco Bell was at fault, given it received lettuce from Taylor Farms.

Controversy surrounds the FDA’s handling of the outbreak, with ABC News reporting criticism from lawmakers such as Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.). Ossoff accused Kennedy of “undermining food safety” due to changes made to the CDC and FDA, which included cuts to the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet). This network previously required states to report Cyclospora cases, but now only mandates reporting of Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.

Ossoff conveyed his concerns in a letter, stating, “Your foolish and self-indulgent demolition of critical public health programs puts Americans at risk.” Kennedy, however, defended his actions, dismissing the criticisms as “invalid” and arguing that the cuts targeted redundant surveillance efforts.

The outbreak has sparked concerns about the effectiveness of current public health strategies and the necessity of robust surveillance systems to prevent future occurrences.
