Justice Alito Confirms He’s Not Retiring, Dismissing Speculation

Amid swirling rumors and media speculation, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito recently confirmed his commitment to continuing his service on the nation’s highest judicial body. Justice Alito, aged 76, dispelled retirement rumors in a recent interview published in The Wall Street Journal, affirming, “Obviously, I’m here for another term.”

The speculation around his potential retirement gained momentum in June due to an error by an experienced Supreme Court reporter at National Public Radio. The reporter accidentally published a pre-written retirement piece, which was swiftly retracted once the inaccuracy was realized. Despite the retraction, conversations continued, with many considering the implications of a possible vacancy on the court, which could have allowed then-President Donald Trump to appoint a fourth justice.

In a rare insight into his perspective, Alito spoke candidly from his chambers about the workings of the Supreme Court, particularly addressing the notion of political bias influencing judicial decisions. He stated, “I vote in every case the way I think the case should be decided,” emphasizing that his decisions are not swayed by political alignment. “If that means a high correlation with what Trump wants, fine. If it means zero correlation with what Trump wants, fine as well,” Alito added, underscoring his commitment to impartiality.
