From Traditional Jobs to Online Success: A Couple’s Journey to Financial Freedom
In 2016, Kelan and Brittany Kline, a couple from Rochester, New York, embarked on a transformative journey to achieve financial independence and time freedom. Their story began amidst their struggle with demanding jobs and significant student loan debt.
At the time, Brittany worked as an elementary school teacher, and Kelan was employed as a jail deputy. The couple rarely had overlapping schedules, which made spending time together difficult. “We were working opposite shifts,” Kelan shared with Business Insider. “We never got to see each other.”
Seeking a lifestyle centered on family and flexibility, the Klines envisioned a new path for themselves. “I was after time freedom,” Kelan expressed, longing for a life without the constraints of a conventional job.
Building a Thriving Online Business
Inspired by personal finance blogs such as Making Sense of Cents and Millennial Money Man, the Klines launched their own blog, The Savvy Couple, in 2016. Their goal was to create an online business focused on financial advice, leveraging their experience in budgeting and debt repayment.
With minimal startup costs, the blog initially earned no revenue for nine months until they received $50 for a sponsored post. This initial success led Kelan to propose leaving his job to dedicate himself fully to the business. Brittany supported this decision, despite the financial risks involved.
By 2019, the blog’s success allowed Brittany to leave her teaching job as the business matched her salary. They paid off their student loans that December. The Kline’s venture expanded with The Savvy Mama, focusing on household finance and family routines, generating revenue through ads, sponsorships, and digital products.
While their income peaked in 2023 and 2024, reaching $1.3 million and $1.1 million respectively, changes in Google search algorithms led to a significant traffic decline. Consequently, the Klines diversified their efforts towards YouTube, memberships, and marketing services.
Prudent Financial Management and Investments
The couple maintained a modest lifestyle despite increasing income, investing the surplus into a variety of financial vehicles like Vanguard’s VTSAX and rental properties. Their commitment to frugality and strategic investments resulted in a net worth exceeding $1 million by 2020, confirmed by Business Insider.
The Klines’ story illustrates how a pursuit of financial freedom can reshape one’s life. Their journey has granted them the flexibility to prioritize family, with Brittany homeschooling their daughters and Kelan working on a schedule of his choosing. “We protect our time like crazy,” Kelan noted, appreciating the freedom they have achieved.
