Imran Khan’s Family Accuses Govt of Violating Supreme Court Order

Controversy Surrounds Imran Khan’s Medical Examination Location

In a recent development, concerns have been raised regarding the treatment of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Authorities have been accused by Khan’s family and his opposition party of disregarding a Supreme Court directive by transporting him to a government hospital instead of a previously designated private facility for a medical check-up.

Uzma Khan, sister of Imran Khan, revealed at a news briefing that she was onsite at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad when her brother was brought in. This move was contrary to the Supreme Court’s order, which had mandated an examination at Shifa International Hospital.

Faisal Sultan, Khan’s personal physician, had gone to Shifa International Hospital, anticipating Khan’s arrival. After waiting throughout the night, Sultan was informed that Khan had already been returned to Adiala prison in Rawalpindi.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar explained that the decision to take Khan to a public hospital arose from security concerns. Supporters of Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had gathered outside Shifa International, leading authorities to reroute Khan for his safety. Tarar assured that Khan was declared medically fit post-examination.

The public hospital’s change of location was met with skepticism by Khan’s family and PTI members. Khan’s sister mentioned that during their meeting, Khan expressed distress over solitary confinement, which he described as a form of mental torture.

Senior PTI leader Suhail Afridi echoed the sentiment that the government had breached the Supreme Court’s order. The court had clearly instructed that Khan be assessed at Shifa International Hospital by a team that included his personal doctor.

Government minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry had previously assured on X that the government would adhere to the Supreme Court’s ruling. However, officials maintain that prison guidelines typically allow for medical treatments in prison facilities or government hospitals when deemed necessary.

Concerns regarding Khan’s health escalated earlier this year when reports from his family claimed he had lost significant vision in one eye. While the government initially contested this, they later conveyed that his condition was improving.

Khan, once celebrated as a cricket star, transitioned into politics and was removed from office in a no-confidence vote in April 2022. Since 2023, he has been facing imprisonment following convictions in various cases. For more on his political journey, visit this link.
