State Ends Contract With AgTech LLC Over Biosolid Use Concerns
In Yuma County, a growing chorus of complaints from local farmers, businesses, and homeowners has led to a significant policy change. Amidst concerns about the application of treated sewage, or biosolids, as fertilizer on state-leased land, Governor Katie Hobbs has announced the termination of the state’s contract with AgTech LLC.
AgTech LLC had been operating on state land since 2002, utilizing biosolids on Arizona State Trust Land. However, the practice has drawn criticism from the community, mainly due to issues such as strong odors, substantial fly infestations, and the dispersal of dust and debris.
Following an inspection by the state Land Department, it was found that AgTech was not adhering to the terms of its leases. Consequently, the Land Commissioner concluded that maintaining these contracts would not serve the best interests of the State Land Trust.
