Controversial Ad Campaign Misrepresents Mendoza’s Tax Policy Stance
In a heated congressional race, the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) has released an advertisement that portrays Democrat JoAnna Mendoza as opposing tax relief for Arizona’s working class. However, the ad employs selective editing to misrepresent her actual position, which targets tax breaks for billionaires.
CLF, a politically influential organization based in Washington D.C., allocates funds to support Republican candidates for the U.S. House. Currently, Mendoza is challenging sitting Representative Juan Ciscomani in a highly competitive district.
The contentious ad features a voiceover claiming, “Mendoza lobbied to make your life more expensive,” followed by a snippet of Mendoza stating, “there should be no new tax cuts, no new tax credits, or sales tax exemptions.” A similar advertisement from the Ciscomani campaign utilizes the same excerpt.
These remarks were originally made by Mendoza during a 2020 online forum organized by the Democrats of Greater Tucson. In the full discussion, Mendoza criticized Republican efforts to slash funding for essential services like public schools and social programs in favor of tax benefits for the affluent and large corporations. She emphasized her opposition to additional tax cuts that disproportionately benefit these groups.
“We know that there have been enormous tax breaks and tax cuts for wealthy folks and for corporations,” Mendoza declared. “So moving forward, there should be no new tax cuts, no new tax credits, or sales tax exemptions.”
In contrast, Rep. Ciscomani backed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which implemented a $1 trillion reduction in Medicaid funding to facilitate tax breaks largely advantageous to wealthier individuals. This legislation could lead to health insurance losses for up to 500,000 Arizonans.
Kyle McCarthy, a spokesperson for Mendoza’s campaign, clarified, “JoAnna Mendoza is focused on lower costs and tax cuts for Arizona families, not tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations.”
