Adriana Guzmán Fralick’s journey into politics was sparked by her opposition to the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. As the Republican nominee for Nevada attorney general, Fralick credits her early experience with challenging the healthcare legislation as a pivotal moment in her political aspirations.
A Decisive Moment in Political Involvement
From 2009 to 2011, Fralick served as the general counsel under Republican Governor Jim Gibbons. During this time, Gibbons’ administration initiated several lawsuits against Obamacare, despite the disagreement of then-Democratic Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto. Fralick recounted this period as her first real exposure to the responsibilities of an attorney general.
In an interview with Newsmakers on August 25, Fralick explained, “We had to deal with Obamacare at the time and we really needed to get to the bottom of it and figure out how it was going to affect Nevadans. We had an attorney general who felt differently than we did. That’s when I reached out to outside counsel and we started these lawsuits with the administration. That was my first experience with that and it kind of planted a seed that it may be something I would one day want to do.”
Healthcare and Political Stakes
Currently, more than 104,000 residents in Nevada are insured under the Affordable Care Act. According to a KFF poll from July, 51% of voters nationwide consider healthcare costs a critical issue for candidates to address in the upcoming elections, with 36% specifically interested in the future of Obamacare.
Past Challenges and Future Contests
Governor Jim Gibbons, under whom Fralick served, was named among the 11 worst governors in the United States in 2010 by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Subsequently, he lost the Republican nomination for reelection.
Fralick’s tenure on the board of Nevada Health Centers from 2011 to 2020 also presents potential challenges. During this period, the nonprofit faced financial difficulties, with the CEO’s salary increasing significantly while the organization operated at a loss and reduced its obstetrics services.
Fralick is set to face Democratic state Senator Nicole Cannizzaro in the November elections. When approached for comment on these issues, Fralick’s spokesperson did not provide a response.
