AI Risks and Counter-Drone Defense: Industry Experts Weigh In
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) presents both unprecedented opportunities and significant concerns. Recent developments have sparked debates among experts about the potential risks AI poses. Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, has recently resigned, highlighting rising apprehensions about the potential dangers of AI. Coxon expressed a stark warning, stating that “the people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”
In contrast, Michael Hiatt, Chief Technology Officer at Epirus, has presented a different perspective during a panel at the Air and Space Cyber Conference, focusing on the practical applications of AI in defense. Discussing counter-drone defenses, Hiatt emphasized that the issue is not merely about cost asymmetry, but rather the challenge lies in “a magazine doubt issue.”
Hiatt elaborated on the urgency of countering Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) threats, which often arrive in large numbers. He stressed the importance of trust in airmen’s systems when response time is reduced to mere seconds. “I know that my DE [Directed Energy] weapons are gonna be able to take it out, and do so in a low-collateral way, in a very low cost per shot way, and most importantly, in a way that preserves my magazine — my scarce interceptors, and then they’ll be able to push that button,” Hiatt explained.
The challenge, as Hiatt pointed out, is in building the necessary trust in these systems. “It’s not science fiction. It’s physics fact,” he stated. Hiatt envisions a future where AI serves as a tool for counter-drone defense, initially requiring human oversight but eventually evolving to operate autonomously.
However, the path to achieving this autonomy is fraught with challenges, particularly as the industry grapples with establishing AI policy regulations. Despite these hurdles, panelists at the conference acknowledged that the momentum of AI’s development is unstoppable. The U.S. military, they noted, must adapt to counter the swift and potentially reckless AI agents employed by adversaries.
Colton Wood, Chief Technology Officer of Digital Force Technologies, reiterated the necessity of evolving military defenses to meet these challenges. “The military must continue ‘to evolve, because the threat is evolving,’” said Wood. “And if we don’t evolve our defenses to basically counter that, we’re just gonna always be on our heels.”
