Kamala Harris to Campaign with Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan

Former Vice President Kamala Harris to Campaign with Democratic Senate Nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to campaign with Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan next week, aiming to bolster support in a key battleground state crucial for determining Senate control.

Harris and El-Sayed, who have previously engaged in discussions following Harris’ endorsement of the progressive Democrat post-primary victory, will make their first public appearance together in Michigan.

The duo is scheduled to participate in a roundtable focusing on Black maternal health, highlighting El-Sayed’s background as a doctor and former health department leader in Detroit and Wayne County.

According to Eduardo Negrón, Harris’ spokesperson, the Vice President is eager to help drive voter turnout in Michigan, emphasizing the importance of flipping the Senate to address economic concerns and combat corruption.

El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers, a former U.S. representative, in the upcoming November elections. Republicans have depicted El-Sayed as a “radical” liberal, aligning him with what they perceive as a shift towards liberalism within the Democratic Party.

The Senate seat, currently held by Democrat Gary Peters, is a pivotal target for Democrats as they strive to secure a Senate majority. With the need to flip four GOP-held seats for control, retaining Michigan becomes crucial, as losing it to Republicans would pose a greater challenge for Democrats.

Notable Democrats, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, have thrown their support behind El-Sayed post-primary, urging party unity in the lead-up to the midterms.

Harris, a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race, plans to engage with local officials and community leaders during her visit to Michigan, underscoring the state’s significance in the Democratic primary process.

As the campaign trail heats up, the collaboration between Harris and El-Sayed underscores the strategic importance of Michigan in shaping the political landscape ahead of the elections.
