Michigan Congressional Candidate Proposes Plan to Curb Tech Overreach
In the politically purple 7th Congressional District, Democratic nominee William Lawrence has taken a strong stance against data centers, making it a focal point of his campaign. Recently, Lawrence unveiled a comprehensive plan called “Stop Tech Overreach” aimed at regulating the development of data centers and advanced artificial intelligence.
Lawrence’s plan includes advocating for a federal moratorium on data center expansion to establish necessary regulations. He emphasized the importance of protecting communities from tech giants that could potentially disrupt local economies and job markets.
The proposed plan outlines steps such as pausing AI development, implementing environmental safeguards for data centers, setting safety standards for AI models, and introducing a national jobs program to mitigate workforce changes caused by AI.
In response to criticism from his opponent, U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Charlotte), Lawrence’s campaign highlighted their differing views on AI regulation. While Barrett’s team acknowledged the need for robust AI policies, they emphasized local autonomy in land use decisions regarding data centers.
Barrett has already introduced legislation focusing on AI oversight, including restrictions on AI in medical treatment decisions and human supervision of autonomous weapon systems. He has also supported measures requiring age verification for AI chatbots and parental consent for minors using such technology.
Both candidates agree on the importance of addressing AI’s impact on various sectors, but differ in their approaches to federal versus local regulation of data centers. Lawrence’s plan seeks to strike a balance between technological progress and community protection, while Barrett advocates for decentralized decision-making on data center projects.
