Max Miller ad distorts Poindexter’s tax and health care positions

Max Miller

Amidst a heated political campaign, a recent advertisement by Republican Rep. Max Miller has come under scrutiny for potentially misleading claims about his Democratic opponent, Brian Poindexter. The ad targets Poindexter on two fronts—his alleged support for “higher taxes” and “government-run health care”—positions that Poindexter has not publicly endorsed.

Misperceived Stances on Health Care

The advertisement references a town hall event in August, where Poindexter discussed his perspective on health care. Although he expressed a desire for universal health coverage, he was clear about his hesitancy to back any Medicare for All legislation without thoroughly understanding its impact on Ohio residents. “If it’s just like Medicare for all starting tomorrow and it’s just like instituted and now we got to figure it out on a whim,” Poindexter stated, “I don’t know if I could support that.”

In a conversation with The Atlantic in July, Poindexter reiterated his cautious approach, indicating his interest in working toward Medicare for All, but not through an immediate single-payer system.

Tax Levy Controversy

The claim regarding Poindexter’s alleged support for higher taxes is linked to his endorsement of a tax levy while serving on the Brook Park City Council in 2020. This levy, approved by nearly 60% of Cuyahoga County voters, cost most households under $3 monthly and ensured continued library services during the COVID-19 crisis.

In 2023, Poindexter supported placing a tax levy renewal on the ballot, endorsed by over 63% of voters. This renewal assisted the Southwest General Health Center, which ironically faces a $4.5 million loss due to Medicaid cuts from legislation backed by Miller.

Political Climate and Polling

Although Max Miller secured his congressional seat in 2022 and was reelected in 2024, his current campaign is fraught with challenges, including domestic abuse allegations from his ex-wife. Recent polling data from Bedrock Polling indicates that Poindexter is ahead by eight percentage points among 866 likely voters.
