Progressive Group Urges Senate Candidate to Modify Stance on Israel
A recent appeal from a coalition of progressive Jewish religious and Democratic Party figures has requested U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed to reconsider some of his criticisms of Israel. The group, known as NonNegotiable Michigan, penned a letter to former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was seen campaigning alongside El-Sayed. In the letter, the group expressed their concerns about El-Sayed’s language regarding Israel, calling for a dialogue to address these issues.
Rabbi Michael Moskowitz highlighted that El-Sayed’s rhetoric has sparked unease within the Jewish community in Michigan, potentially impacting Democratic support in the upcoming election. The Democratic candidate has been vocal in his disapproval of the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza and U.S. arms deals with Israel.
Despite the apprehension expressed by some Jewish Michiganders, there are factions within the state’s Jewish population who have pledged their support for El-Sayed. Michigan Jews for Democracy recently circulated a petition with over 600 signatures endorsing El-Sayed, aiming to regain control of the U.S. Senate.
The Jewish vote is poised to play a critical role in the contest for Michigan’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, contested by Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. The discourse surrounding Israel has deeply resonated with many Jews in Michigan, prompting feelings of alienation and political disenfranchisement.
Cantor Regina Hayut conveyed that the current political climate has left her and others in the Jewish community feeling marginalized and disconnected. Some individuals have indicated a reluctance to participate in the election or engage with the political process due to these sentiments.
While the El-Sayed campaign did not address requests for comment, the ongoing dialogue surrounding Israel and its impact on the Michigan Jewish electorate continues to shape the narrative of the upcoming Senate race.
