Jen Kiggans’ Wealth Growth in Congress Sparks Controversy with Luria

Financial disclosures reveal that Virginia Representative Jen Kiggans’ personal finances have significantly shifted since her congressional tenure began in 2023. This development emerges amidst ongoing political rivalries and claims regarding financial growth while holding office.

When Kiggans was elected in 2022, her reported net worth was as high as $2.9 million. However, her latest financial disclosures, submitted in August, indicate a potential increase to $7.5 million. This suggests a notable rise in her wealth by approximately $400,000 to $6.1 million.

This financial growth presents a challenging narrative for Kiggans, given her criticisms of her Democratic opponent, former Representative Elaine Luria, for purportedly increasing personal wealth during her time in office. Kiggans, who defeated Luria in the 2022 elections, is once again facing her in the upcoming race.

The situation is further complicated as Luria’s financial standing seems to have remained relatively stable. Upon entering Congress in 2019, Luria reported a net worth ranging from $3.7 million to $13.6 million, which slightly adjusted to between $3.4 million and $12.9 million by the time she left.

Kiggans has consistently alleged that Luria’s net worth surged by $21 million over her tenure. The basis of this claim is unclear and appears to greatly exceed the maximum possible increase in Luria’s financial disclosures.

In an incident reflecting this misinformation, Fox News had to retract an erroneous report suggesting Luria experienced a dramatic rise in wealth while serving in Congress.

The political contest between Luria and Kiggans remains intense, as they vie for representation of Virginia’s 2nd District, which encompasses Virginia Beach. A poll conducted by House Majority PAC in July indicated the race as being evenly matched.
