In a significant development amidst escalating regional tensions, Taiwan has bolstered its defense capabilities with the arrival of two new F-16V Block 70 fighter jets. These are the first of a 66-jet order placed in 2019, aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s air force as it faces frequent incursions by China’s military.
China’s growing military pressure on Taiwan has been a constant challenge, with Beijing claiming the self-governing island as its territory. Taiwan has expressed frustration over delays in receiving U.S. arms, despite the U.S. being its main ally and arms supplier.
The newly delivered jets landed at Taitung’s Chihhang Air Base, following their journey through Hawaii and Guam, marking a pivotal moment in Taiwan’s military enhancement.
President Lai Ching-te highlighted the significance of the arrival in bolstering Taiwan’s defense, expressing gratitude to the United States for its continued support via a Facebook post.
Defense Minister Wellington Koo, addressing the media in Taipei, stated that more F-16Vs are expected soon, though specifics were not provided.
Back in 2019, the U.S. authorized an $8 billion deal for Lockheed Martin’s F-16V jets to reinforce Taiwan’s fleet, aiming for a total of over 200 F-16s. However, software-related issues had delayed the delivery.

The jets arrived shortly after a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Earlier, Trump had delayed a $14 billion arms package for Taiwan, though a $11 billion package was approved in December 2025.
China threat level
U.S. officials, as reported by Reuters, consider a Chinese invasion of Taiwan before 2028 increasingly improbable, with Taiwan’s presidential election scheduled for early 2028. “China’s intention to annex Taiwan by force has never changed,” Koo remarked.
In addition to foreign arms, Taiwan is advancing its domestic defense initiatives, including a submarine program targeting the construction of eight vessels with international expertise primarily from the U.S. and the UK. The first submarine, the Narwhal, faces delays but is undergoing final tests according to CSBC chairman Chen Jeng-horng in Kaohsiung.
Advanced new fighter
The F-16V jets feature enhanced avionics, weapons, and radar systems, designed to counter China’s J-20 stealth fighters. Despite Taiwan’s requests, the U.S. has withheld its most advanced fighters like the F-22 or F-35.
While the U.S. is legally obligated to aid Taiwan’s self-defense, diplomatic ties do not exist between the two. Beijing has consistently urged the U.S. to cease arms sales to Taiwan, but the U.S. State Department maintains its commitment to supporting Taiwan, stating, “We continue standing with friends and allies across the Indo-Pacific to advance our shared prosperity, security, and values — that includes Taiwan.”
