ASU Coach Disposes Phone Amid Investigation Into Player’s Collapse

ASU Coach Greg Powers Under Scrutiny After Player’s Heat Stroke Incident

Arizona State University’s hockey team finds itself at the center of controversy following a severe incident involving one of its players, Matthew Mayich. The young athlete collapsed during a practice session, leading to serious health concerns and prompting questions about the team’s coaching practices.

According to Leonard Aragon, the attorney representing Mayich’s family, Coach Greg Powers discarded his cell phone amid receiving death threats. The attorney highlighted in a letter to ASU’s general counsel that the phone, used for work-related activities on the day Mayich collapsed, was crucial for evidence preservation.

“The problem we have with that is you don’t have to replace your phone, you can replace your phone number, and by replacing the phone, you potentially lose a lot of evidence that may be relevant to this case,” the letter stated, underscoring the potential loss of vital information.

In response to the ongoing investigation, ASU has placed Powers on administrative leave. Meanwhile, Mayich continues to recover in the hospital nearly two months after suffering a severe brain injury, which occurred following a rigorous, military-style training session.

The case has taken a legal turn, with the family’s attorney urging the Maricopa County attorney’s office to initiate a formal investigation into the incident. The call for legal scrutiny highlights the serious nature of the accusations and the potential implications for those involved.
