Joby and L3Harris team up to develop autonomous VTOL aircraft for defense

Joby Aviation and L3Harris Collaborate on Advanced Autonomous Aircraft for Defense

In a significant stride towards modernizing defense aviation, Joby Aviation and L3Harris have announced a collaboration aimed at developing an autonomous hybrid vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. This innovative project is designed to meet various defense applications, showcasing a blend of cutting-edge technology and strategic utility.

The partnership aims to initiate flight tests in the upcoming fall, with the goal of showcasing operational capabilities during government exercises by 2026. This timeline highlights the commitment both companies have towards advancing defense technology efficiently and effectively.

In a joint statement released Friday, the companies emphasized the strength of their collaboration, noting, “The collaboration leverages Joby’s existing commercial aircraft development program and leading manufacturing capabilities, combined with L3Harris’ proven expertise on platform missionization including sensors, effectors, communication and collaborative autonomy.”

The newly conceptualized aircraft draws inspiration from Joby’s S4 platform and is engineered to operate either piloted or autonomously. It utilizes a gas turbine propulsion system and is envisioned to support a range of defense missions, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as contested logistics. Its VTOL capability enables it to take off vertically akin to a helicopter, augmenting its operational versatility.

While Joby Aviation is primarily recognized for its commercial ventures, particularly in developing electric aircraft for air taxi services, the company has a longstanding relationship with the Department of Defense (DOD). This partnership dates back to 2016 when Joby secured a contract from the Defense Innovation Unit.

In a pivotal moment for the company, 2020 saw the Air Force’s innovation branch, AFWERX, grant Joby’s electric VTOL aircraft its first airworthiness certification through the Agility Prime program. This marked a significant milestone in the integration of advanced air mobility solutions within the military domain.

Continuing its collaboration with the U.S. military, Joby delivered one of its air taxis to Edwards Air Force Base in California in 2023. This deployment, part of the Agility Prime initiative, is intended to facilitate testing and support routine base operations, such as transporting cargo and personnel. The Air Force is also evaluating the potential use of such aircraft in combat rescue missions.

Reflecting on the partnership with L3Harris, Joby CEO JoeBen Bevirt remarked, “We have worked closely with the Department of Defense over the past decade to give them a front row seat to the development of our dual-purpose technologies, and we’re now ready to demonstrate and deploy it.”
