Controversy Surrounds Efforts to Revoke Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Citizenship

The Trump administration is currently under scrutiny for its attempts to strip Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of her U.S. citizenship and deport her. Despite the lack of evidence proving Omar is unlawfully in the country, the administration’s actions have sparked debate over political motivations and racial undertones. Omar, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, is a Somali-born Muslim Black woman, factors that some believe have influenced these efforts.
In a move that has raised concerns about overreach, federal agents executed a search warrant at Omar’s residence near Washington, DC, as part of an investigation into alleged immigration fraud. Homeland Security Investigations, part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), conducted the search, claiming the investigation is ongoing.
Tom Homan, known as Trump’s “border czar,” confirmed the existence of a federal criminal investigation involving Omar. According to The Associated Press, authorities have seized her phone and issued numerous grand jury subpoenas, including to some of her family members. As reported by the New York Times, her sister Sahra Noor and other relatives have been subpoenaed.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the investigation aims to build a case that could lead to revoking Omar’s citizenship. The administration’s allegations, reported by Al Jazeera, focus on whether Omar or her late father altered her age on immigration documents, potentially allowing her to gain citizenship through her father.
At issue in the citizenship inquiry is whether Omar or her late father altered her age in immigration paperwork to indicate that she was 17 rather than 18 when her father applied for citizenship, the Journal reported.
According to the newspaper, investigators are examining whether that allowed her to acquire citizenship through her father rather than having to undergo a separate application process.
Omar’s father died in 2020, complicating efforts to collect evidence on whether Omar lied about her own age – which, according to a former top immigration official in the Justice Department, the Trump administration would hinge its case on – or whether her father lied on her behalf.
The Journal also reported that Homeland Security Investigations officials examined a similar allegation during the administration of former President Joe Biden but did not pursue it because they lacked evidence of fraud.
The ongoing investigation into Omar has prompted questions about the true intentions behind these actions. Is this initiative genuinely about safeguarding the U.S. from unlawful immigrants, or is it a politically motivated move fueled by xenophobia?
Trump’s history of targeting Omar has been well-documented. In November of last year, he told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that Omar should not criticize him because she is “from Somalia.”
“I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, where they don’t have anything – they don’t have police, they don’t have military, they don’t have anything, all they have is crime – and [Omar] comes in and tells us how to run our country!” he said.
Trump has often used his platform to attack Omar’s background and has even repeated debunked rumors about her. He has described her on social media as “always wrapped in her swaddling hijab,” falsely suggesting she entered the U.S. illegally and spreading a debunked rumor that she married her brother for a green card.
In January, Trump announced a supposed investigation into Omar’s finances, claiming she went from “NOTHING” to being worth millions, though no substantial findings have been reported since.
Trump’s disdain for Somalia and Omar has been vocal, raising concerns about potential abuse of power and the influence of personal biases in government actions.
