Thirty-Four Candidates Vie for Detroit School Board Seats

Thirty-Four Candidates Compete for Detroit School Board Seats

In a highly contested race, thirty-four individuals are vying for five open seats on the board for the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). This election is crucial as it could lead to significant changes in the oversight of Michigan’s largest district.

The current board composition is set to undergo a substantial shift, with only two incumbents seeking reelection out of the five open seats. The remaining positions were vacated due to resignations, including the unfortunate passing of a board member.

Among the candidates, thirty-one are running for standard four-year terms, while three are competing for a two-year partial term. Despite the large number of contenders, only nineteen responded to a questionnaire regarding key issues such as chronic absenteeism, enrollment growth, and impending funding challenges.

For voters seeking more information on the candidates’ backgrounds and policy proposals, a comprehensive voter guide is available. The election’s outcome will shape the future direction of DPSCD, impacting students, families, and the broader Detroit community.
