Army Expands Civilian Skills Program with 17 New Eligible MOSs

The Army Expands Civilian Acquired Skills Program with New Job Specialties

The U.S. Army is enhancing its efforts to integrate civilian-acquired skills into military service by expanding its Civilian Acquired Skills Program (ACASP). This initiative, which allows recruits to leverage their civilian training for military advancement, has recently seen the addition of 17 new military occupational specialties (MOSs) as of October 1, increasing the total number of eligible jobs to 60.

The ACASP is designed to streamline the transition for recruits who possess job-specific certifications or training from civilian life. According to the Army, these qualified individuals can enter the service with modified training schedules and enjoy a higher rank than their counterparts upon enlistment.

The latest expansion of the program underscores the Army’s commitment to aligning civilian expertise with critical military needs, particularly in areas like healthcare, technical maintenance, and electronic trades. Brig. Gen. Gregory Johnson, the director of Military Personnel Management, remarked, “ACASP offers a two-pronged benefit. The Army gets skilled specialists into the force faster and at a lower cost, while the soldier receives a significant head start in their military career.”

To qualify for the ACASP, applicants must provide verified evidence of their civilian training through official documentation such as certificates, licenses, or transcripts. Additionally, they must meet age, physical fitness, and background check requirements.

The newly added MOSs to the program are:

  • 68V – Respiratory Specialist
  • 91A – M1 Abrams Tank System Maintainer
  • 91J – Quartermaster and Chemical Equipment Repairer
  • 91M – Bradley Fighting Vehicle System Maintainer
  • 91P – Self-Propelled Artillery Systems Mechanic
  • 91S – Stryker Systems Maintainer
  • 92A – Automated Logistical Specialist
  • 92F – Petroleum Supply Specialist
  • 92W – Water Treatment Specialist
  • 92Y – Unit Supply Specialist
  • 94E – Radio Equipment Repairer
  • 94F – Computer/Detection Systems Repairer
  • 94P – Multiple Launch Rocket System Repairer
  • 94R – Avionic and Survivability Equipment Repairer
  • 94S – Patriot System Repairer
  • 94T – Short Range Air Defense System Repairer
  • 94Y – Automated Test Systems Operator/Maintainer

Service announcements highlight additional benefits for those enlisting under ACASP, such as the ability to choose a preferred duty station, subject to availability, and eligibility for sign-on bonuses.

This development coincides with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s focus on enhancing training and warfighting effectiveness in combat roles. In a recent address at Quantico, Virginia, he emphasized the importance of maintaining rigorous standards for combat-specific MOSs, stating that these roles will adhere to the highest male standards due to their critical nature.
