JERUSALEM — In a significant move to bolster its military strength, Elbit Systems has secured a $210 million contract to enhance the Israel Defense Forces’ Merkava main battle tanks. This upgrade comes in the wake of recent ceasefires on Israel’s northern and southern fronts involving Gaza and Lebanon, following the Iron Swords war.
The Iron Swords conflict, spanning two years, saw numerous Israeli armored vehicles sustain damage. However, about 90% were swiftly returned to operational status, as per military reports. Now, Elbit aims to further extend the lifespan of these tanks through a six-year modernization project. The initiative focuses on renewing the tanks’ electronic assemblies and enhancing onboard systems.
This upgrade will introduce high-performance, lightweight, AI-enhanced electro-optical sights, enabling panoramic observations in both day and night conditions. These improvements will significantly boost target detection, acquisition, and tracking capabilities.
The Merkava tank series, now in its fourth generation, is predominantly produced in Israel, with 80% of its components sourced locally. Despite initially withholding exports, Israel struck its first international Merkava tank deal in 2014, although the buyer remains undisclosed.
In 2023, Israel engaged in discussions to sell retired Merkava Mark 2 and Mark 3 tanks to undisclosed European and South American nations. These talks, however, were halted due to the Iron Swords conflict.
The news of the tank upgrades coincides with Elbit’s financial report release, highlighting a record order backlog of $25.2 billion by the third quarter’s end. Notably, the land sector experienced robust growth, with sales reaching $594 million, marking a 41% increase. European nations accounted for a significant portion of this demand, contributing $536 million.
Israel contributed approximately one-third of Elbit’s quarterly sales, generating around $642 million in revenue. In addition, Elbit revealed a covert $2.3 billion sale, with transaction details withheld at the customer’s request.
