Arizona Democrats Elect Robert Branscomb as New Party Leader

Arizona Democrats Choose New Leadership After Election Setbacks

In the wake of a disappointing 2024 election performance, the Arizona Democratic Party has decided to shift gears with new leadership. The change was marked by the election of Robert Branscomb as the new party chair, following a decisive vote during the state party meeting on Saturday.

Branscomb, who previously held the position of vice chair, takes over from Yolanda Bejarano, who was unsuccessful in her re-election campaign despite support from prominent Democrats, including Governor Katie Hobbs. Bejarano’s campaign had emphasized her fundraising abilities, yet the broader party membership called for a fresh direction after a series of electoral losses.

In his bid for the chairmanship, Branscomb highlighted a strategy centered on grassroots engagement rather than merely financial contributions. He articulated his vision during a debate, stating, “Being chair of ADP is more than just fundraising and cutting checks to the county parties. Those things are important, yes, but they’re not the end. They’re the means to a bigger vision.” His focus lies in reconnecting with the working class and improving outreach in rural Arizona, developing a unified strategy, and refining the party’s messaging.

Branscomb further criticized the party’s current communication tactics, noting, “We let the republicans define who we are and what we’re about and let them hijack that they’re the working party for the people and that’s not true.”

The leadership overhaul also saw the removal of Rick McGuire from his role as party treasurer. This decision comes in the wake of allegations against McGuire and Bejarano involving self-dealing, an issue that arose from a contract McGuire signed for services beyond his official duties, as reported by the Arizona Republic.

In a joint statement, Governor Hobbs, Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, and Attorney General Kris Mayes expressed gratitude to Bejarano and extended their congratulations to Branscomb, emphasizing a commitment to future collaboration. “Let’s look ahead to 2026 with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. The work starts now, and we look forward to working alongside the new chair and the entire Arizona Democratic Party,” they stated.
