U.S. Army Enhances Long-Range Capabilities with New Artillery Unit in New York
This fall marks a strategic expansion for the U.S. Army as it activates a new artillery battalion in New York, aiming to bolster long-range strike capabilities for commanders in Europe. The Third Battalion, 12th Field Artillery Regiment, was officially activated on October 17 under the 56th Theater Multi-Domain Command.
The activation represents a pivotal step in the Army’s modernization efforts, as highlighted by a recent announcement from the command. The battalion, while administratively associated with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, operates under the 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force, which is part of the 56th Multi-Domain Command-Europe.
The newly formed unit introduces a contemporary long-range precision fires battalion, offering enhanced range, flexibility, and tools for deterrence in a rapidly evolving security landscape. This development is crucial for maintaining strategic options in the European theater.
The battalion comprises over 500 soldiers and is equipped with High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), a truck-mounted multiple-rocket launcher capable of firing precisely guided rockets up to approximately 186 miles, contingent on the munition type. HIMARS is developed by Lockheed Martin. The unit also boasts Mid-Range Capability (MRC) systems, designed to extend strike reach even further.
Col. Jeffrey Pickler, the task force commander, emphasized the significance of this activation, stating it demonstrates a “commitment to readiness, innovation, and to our allies and partners abroad.” However, details regarding the overseas deployment of soldiers and equipment remain unspecified.
While officials have yet to respond to requests for further information, the activation forms part of the Army Transformation Initiative, which aims to reshape the force structure strategically.
