AMD and Oracle Forge Significant AI Chip Deployment Agreement
In a notable advancement within the tech industry, AMD is set to enhance its presence in the AI chip market through a new collaboration with Oracle. The partnership involves AMD equipping Oracle’s data centers with 50,000 cutting-edge AI chips starting from the latter half of 2026.
Details on the financial aspects of the deal remain undisclosed as both companies reserved comments on the specifics. This development follows closely on the heels of AMD’s recent substantial agreement with OpenAI, further intensifying AMD’s competition with Nvidia, a key player in the sector. Nvidia is currently recognized for its strong foothold in AI technology.
The chips, known as Instinct MI450 GPUs, are designed for both training AI models and performing inference tasks, extending AMD’s reach in AI applications. Karan Batta, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s Senior Vice President, expressed confidence in the potential uptake of AMD’s technology, particularly in the inferencing domain, during a conversation with CNBC.
Stock movements reflected the market’s response to these developments. AMD’s stock experienced a modest rise of approximately 2.5% following the announcement, whereas Oracle saw an initial 2.2% increase before experiencing a decline of up to 5% in morning trading.
This collaboration is the latest in a series of high-profile AI infrastructure partnerships among technology giants. Recent announcements include a deal between Broadcom and OpenAI for 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators and Nvidia’s provision of 10 gigawatts of GPUs to OpenAI, accompanied by a substantial $100 billion investment.
In addition, OpenAI and Oracle have previously agreed on a partnership aimed at developing 4.5 gigawatts of AI computing capacity, a deal valued at over $300 billion over five years.
