Internet Icon Hank Green Addresses AI Controversy and Slows Down Content Creation
Hank Green, widely recognized as a consistent and trusted figure in online content creation, recently announced a reduction in his production pace following criticism from fans regarding his use of artificial intelligence (AI). This decision has sparked discussions about the role of AI in content creation and its potential impacts.
Green is well-known for managing several educational YouTube channels, including SciShow and Crash Course. SciShow delves into various scientific fields, while Crash Course breaks down complex subjects like Latin American literature and statistics. Alongside his brother, John Green, he also started the Vlogbrothers channel. Despite these ventures, Green recently informed his audience via Reddit that there would be a noticeable decrease in his video uploads.
“Expect less hankschannel. It may need to pause for a while,” Green expressed. “It may be that Hankschannel comes back with writing and research support. It may be that it comes back with just way fewer videos.”
Green also announced a pause on two of his daily word games, SMUSH and 4×3, amidst the ongoing debate about AI’s role in his creative process. The controversy stemmed from Green admitting on X that he used OpenAI’s ChatGPT for script research, leading some users to question his transparency and reliability.
Following the backlash, Green removed the post and addressed the issue on Reddit, admitting to feeling “mortified” for disappointing his supporters. He acknowledged, “I have been relying too heavily on AI as a research aid. It can be very useful for this task, giving me access to a lot of papers I didn’t know existed really fast, but I think that has been to the detriment of my work because it has not given me the freedom to find all of my own ways into and around a topic.”
As AI continues to integrate into everyday life, concerns have arisen about its influence on critical thinking skills. A 2025 survey by Workday highlighted that nearly 50% of respondents feared AI could contribute to a decline in critical thinking. Additionally, OpenAI is facing lawsuits related to mental health issues, including allegations of the chatbot encouraging harmful behavior. An investigation into ChatGPT’s effects on young users was also initiated by a coalition of states.
Another challenge in AI’s reliability is the occurrence of “AI hallucinations,” where language models generate incorrect information. Such inaccuracies have appeared in legal documents, prompting apologies from law firms and major consulting companies.
While Green utilizes AI for resource gathering, he emphasized that his audience deserves clarity on whether his content is authored by him or generated by a chatbot. “I’ve been moving so fast that my own process isn’t actually clear to me and I want to have it be a guarantee moving forward,” Green stated.
He reassured fans that he’s not against AI but understands the concerns over its training, environmental impact, and economic power consolidation by tech giants. Green issued an apology, acknowledging the importance of differing opinions on AI usage, saying, “It is very likely that you (the reader) and I disagree on how or even whether AI should be used… But I have also always believed that my audience is more likely to be right than I am. You know what this feels like in a way I can’t. And I am so sorry for diluting myself in this way and harming the thing that we have all built together.”
Green concluded by discussing the pressures he faces in content creation and his intention to better manage his connection with AI. He admitted, “But mostly I need to come to terms with the fact that the level of dopamine I’ve been getting from interacting with LLMs…with doing more and more and more and more…is not healthy for me or good for the world. It is careless, and has disconnected me from where people are on this.”
