Keeping Marriage Strong While Working Together for 15 Years

For couples who work together, maintaining a healthy marriage often seems like an overwhelming challenge. However, for one couple, working side by side for 15 years has been a rewarding experience, akin to marriage itself—it requires effort and understanding but is ultimately fulfilling.

Paul and his wife have experienced two very different work environments together. Initially, they both held positions at a large biotech company in Southern California, with Paul managing IT systems and his wife working as an executive assistant in health economics. Today, they operate a small consulting business together.

The First Collaboration: Keeping Personal and Professional Separate

During their tenure at the biotech company, Paul was responsible for managing the company’s email and storage systems, a role that required working behind the scenes to ensure seamless operations. His wife, on the other hand, was more visible, supporting a department head in a new health economics team. Despite working in the same company, they kept their marriage discreet, ensuring no conflicts arose from their relationship.

Their strategy paid off. They avoided any workplace drama or bias that could have arisen from their marriage, maintaining a low profile to avoid colleagues leveraging their connection for professional gain. The couple’s contrasting personalities—Paul’s quiet and analytical nature versus his wife’s outgoing and visible role—helped maintain their professional individuality.

When their time at the biotech company ended and they moved to a farm in Puerto Rico, they left as they had arrived: as individuals sharing a last name, without fanfare or joint celebrations.

Running a Business Together: Harmony and Separation

Currently, Paul and his wife run Mayani Farms, an eco-organic farm, and provide consulting services to others. They are open about their partnership, as their skills complement each other. His wife handles marketing and project management, while Paul focuses on farming expertise and sustainable design.

Their approach to working together today is described with a simple mantra: “hakuna matata,” emphasizing the importance of letting stress roll off. The couple has managed to maintain harmony by keeping personal and professional boundaries clear, often picking their battles wisely. They prioritize peace, rarely arguing, and have found ways to separate work from their marriage when necessary.

Parallels Between Marriage and Business

In their journey, Paul and his wife have discovered that both marriage and business require adaptability, growth, and intentional decision-making to prevent small issues from escalating into significant problems. They recognize that the same patterns leading to failure in relationships can be found in business, stressing the importance of foresight and proactive solutions to ensure success in both areas.
