Throughout my life, I’ve been equally captivated by the world of dogs and the lessons they can teach us about leadership. As a professor of management and a long-time dog enthusiast, I’ve engaged with various dog breeds and their owners, which led me to explore how the characteristics of different breeds can be applied to leadership. My experiences, combined with my academic background, inspired me to write “Learning Leadership from Dogs.”
By observing dogs, we can learn essential qualities that are valuable in leadership roles. Here are five such traits that stand out and can significantly improve leadership effectiveness.
Joyful Living
Many dogs exhibit an infectious enthusiasm for life, often described by the French term ‘joie de vivre.’ This zest can be seen in breeds like the otterhound, such as my own dog, Fiona, who relished simple pleasures like walks in the woods. This positive outlook can enhance a leader’s ability to empathize and connect with their team, as research suggests that positive moods foster helpfulness and understanding.
Bravery
Courage is a trait admired in leaders, and it’s exemplified in breeds like the Dutch shepherd. Known for their bravery and work in police and military roles, Dutch shepherds take risks to protect others. This mirrors the courage needed in leadership to uphold values and support teams in challenging situations.
Intelligence
Effective leadership requires both emotional and cognitive intelligence. The border collie exemplifies these qualities, excelling in herding tasks by understanding and responding to the needs of different sheep. Leaders, too, must recognize and adapt to the diverse needs of their team members to foster a productive environment.
Kindness
In the realm of leadership, kindness is often undervalued, yet it is crucial for nurturing trust and respect. The Newfoundland is renowned for its gentle and protective nature, often used in water rescues. Leaders can learn from this by addressing mistakes with compassion, promoting an atmosphere of psychological safety.
Resilience
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, a vital trait for leaders facing crises or failures. The Rhodesian ridgeback, originally bred for lion hunting, embodies resilience through its perseverance in the face of danger. Like these dogs, leaders must remain steadfast and ready to seize success despite challenges.
Dogs remain a beloved pet choice, known for their distinct personalities and admirable traits. Their lives offer valuable lessons in leadership through joy, courage, intelligence, kindness, and resilience, inspiring us to be better leaders in our own lives.
