The Evolution of Software Engineering: AI’s Impact at Nvidia
In the rapidly evolving tech landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) is redefining roles within companies, and Nvidia is at the forefront of this transformation. CEO Jensen Huang reveals that his software engineers are embracing the shift towards AI, finding it an exciting evolution in their work.
During an interview featured on Nvidia’s platform, Huang explained, “These agentic systems are new skills, and now we have a lot of software engineers building agents.” He added, “If you ask me, every one of my software engineers prefers to be building agents than to be writing Python code.” This shift marks a significant change from traditional coding tasks to creating AI-driven agents, benchmarks, and guardrails.
Huang noted that AI is alleviating the monotonous aspects of coding, offering engineers the opportunity to engage in more imaginative and creative work. “You’re taking all the mundane work, and you’re trying to get this agent to do it,” he stated. “That requires imagination, that requires creativity, a lot of technology.”
The Nvidia cofounder, who established the company in 1993, has been vocal about his vision for AI in the workplace. He envisions a future where Nvidia will mass-deploy agents to enhance productivity across all sectors of the company.
‘Whole Bunch of Jobs’
Contrary to the common fear that AI might displace jobs, Huang argues that it is a catalyst for job creation. “The amount of work that we have to do to bring AI into the world is really quite incredible,” he remarked. “So it’s creating a whole bunch of jobs. And, my software engineers love this.”
While other tech leaders like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Amazon’s Andy Jassy express concerns over AI-induced job displacement, Huang maintains a different stance. He believes AI is generating a wealth of new job opportunities and sees it as a pivotal chance for the United States to rejuvenate its industrial capacity. “This is the part that people don’t realize about AI. The first thing that AI is doing right now is creating an enormous number of jobs,” Huang noted in a previous TV interview. “AI creates jobs. AI is the United States’s best opportunity to re-industrialize ourselves.”
