Pelosi’s Successor Race: Chakrabarti’s Wealth and Progressive Platform

This article has been updated following Pelosi’s decision not to seek reelection, initially published in August 2025.

Nancy Pelosi has long been considered one of the wealthiest members of Congress. Her potential successor, Saikat Chakrabarti, could surpass her in wealth. A progressive activist eyeing the Democratic primary, Chakrabarti’s net worth is estimated at least $167 million, potentially making him one of the wealthiest individuals in Congress if elected.

Chakrabarti’s Wealth and Political Journey

Chakrabarti, previously known for managing the campaign and serving as the first chief of staff for Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, laid the foundation for his wealth as a founding engineer at Stripe. Reflecting on his financial success, Chakrabarti stated, “After I helped build the payment processing company Stripe, I became a centimillionaire — at least on paper,” highlighting the disparities in wealth distribution in America.

Chakrabarti’s campaign, launched earlier this year, emphasizes a progressive agenda, challenging Pelosi’s prolonged tenure and questioning her continued efficacy in advocating for Democratic values.

Financial Disclosures: Pelosi vs. Chakrabarti

Both Pelosi and Chakrabarti have disclosed their financial standings, as required for members of Congress and candidates. Pelosi’s 2024 disclosure reveals assets between $100 million and $422 million, with liabilities primarily in mortgages ranging from $36.5 million to $106 million. The majority of their wealth lies in real estate and stocks in major tech companies, including Apple, Alphabet, and Amazon.

Chakrabarti’s disclosure illustrates a minimum worth of $167 million, with no liabilities reported. His wealth primarily derives from equity in Stripe and a Fidelity investment fund, each valued above $50 million.

Chakrabarti: A Unique Progressive Voice

Standing out among progressive candidates for his significant wealth, Chakrabarti’s financial background contrasts with other prominent progressives. For instance, his former boss, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, disclosed assets worth between $17,000 and $81,000, including student loan debt.

Chakrabarti has largely self-funded his campaign, with Federal Election Commission records indicating 75% of campaign funds stem from his personal loans. He emphasizes, “A society that works like that, where you either hit the lottery and get rich or you’ll never be able to afford a house or a secure retirement, is crazy.”

The Race to Succeed Pelosi

As Chakrabarti vies for Pelosi’s seat, he joins a pool of candidates including State Sen. Scott Weiner and San Francisco supervisor Connie Chan, each bringing distinct perspectives and policy focuses to the race. Notably absent from the race is Pelosi’s daughter, Christine, who has opted to pursue a state Senate seat instead.
