Ukraine Repurposes Ground Robots Amidst Shortages
In response to a pressing shortage of ground robots, Ukrainian military forces have begun adapting machines intended for combat missions to handle logistical tasks. This pivot comes as drones have made the battlefield increasingly perilous, pushing units to innovate in their approach to supply runs.
The battlefield conditions in Ukraine have elevated the importance of uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs), as these machines are now heavily relied upon to perform logistics operations. “The most common missions for ground robots right now are logistics,” stated the commander of a UGV unit in the Lava Regiment, part of Ukraine’s 2nd “Khartia” Corps. Known by the call sign Mathematician, he highlighted the struggle to find sufficient robots for these essential tasks, explaining that they have resorted to using combat robots typically armed with machine guns for logistics.
The shortage of UGVs is a widespread issue. Another commander, Dozor, from the Svoboda Battalion in Ukraine’s Rubizh Brigade, echoed these concerns. He noted that all logistics and casualty evacuation efforts in the “kill zone”—areas heavily monitored by drones—are now conducted by ground robots. To adapt to varying mission requirements, his unit uses “universal platforms and appropriate modules that can be quickly removed or installed,” enabling a swift transition from combat to logistics roles.
Ukraine’s strategic focus involves having robots handle 100% of battlefield logistics, a necessity as the kill zone continues to widen. This has made ground robots a significant investment for both Ukraine and its defense manufacturers. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has set a goal for companies to produce 50,000 units by the end of 2026. Notably, there has been a surge in purchases from Kyiv’s digital weapons marketplace, with over 3,000 robots ordered since the marketplace’s inception.
The defense ministry reported that Kyiv had contracted more than 22,000 ground robots since the beginning of 2026, nearly double the previous year’s total. Despite this, commanders like Mathematician stress the ongoing need for more affordable logistics UGVs, which could allow combat-designed machines to fulfill their intended roles.
The operational lifespan of these machines is a concern, as they are expendable and often face quick attrition. Mathematician noted that the lifespan of logistics robots is decreasing rapidly, with survival rates varying significantly by region. In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a robot might endure only three or four missions, whereas in other areas, it could survive up to 20 missions.
Nevertheless, ground robots have completed over 66,000 missions so far this year, taking on high-risk logistics and evacuation tasks, according to Ukraine’s defense ministry’s statement in late July.
