Croatia’s Major Move Towards Modernizing Military with Leopard 2A8 Tanks
The Croatian Ministry of Defense has embarked on a significant modernization of its military capabilities by ordering 44 Leopard 2A8 tanks. This substantial acquisition is valued at nearly €1.5 billion ($1.8 billion).
The agreement was formalized in Berlin on December 10, with Croatian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ivan Anušić signing the contract. The signing was witnessed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković during an official visit.
Prime Minister Plenković highlighted the role of the European Union’s Security Action For Europe (SAFE) initiative in facilitating this purchase. Through this program, the EU provides low-cost loans for defense acquisitions to its member states, focusing on bridging critical capability gaps with a fund of approximately €150 billion.
“Of the 1.7 billion euros approved for Croatia, a part of these funds will be used to finance the procurement of 44 Leopard 2A8 tanks,” stated Plenković, as quoted by the Croatian Ministry of Defense.
Plenković further noted Croatia’s shift from eastern military technology to Western technology, emphasizing that the partnership with Germany is integral to strengthening defense cooperation. Deliveries of the tanks are expected between 2028 and 2030, as per the defense ministry’s plan.
Croatia’s purchase is part of a larger joint acquisition of the 2A8 tanks by Germany and various NATO countries, including the Czech Republic and Lithuania. The Netherlands and Norway are also part of this collaborative procurement effort.
The Leopard 2A8 tank, produced by KNDS, was recently unveiled in November, marking the first major update to the Leopard series since 1992.
