In a series of unexpected leadership changes within the U.S. military, Gen. James Mingus remains in his role as Vice Chief of Staff. Despite speculation about his departure, Mingus has not indicated any plans to step down. His tenure, which typically lasts at least three years, has not yet reached the two-year mark.
The Army has not disclosed details regarding Mingus’ potential replacement, with Brig. Gen. LaNeve, currently a top military aide to Pete Hegseth, being considered for promotion. Maj. Peter Sulzona, speaking for Mingus, stated that while he would not comment on pending nominations, Gen. Mingus is focused on “warfighting and the wellbeing of our Soldiers.”
Before his current position, Gen. Mingus served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Gen. Mark Milley starting in 2020. Despite Milley’s appointment by former President Trump, he later faced criticism from the administration during Trump’s second term, as reported by Military Times.
In recent weeks, the military has seen several high-profile retirements, including Gen. Thomas Bussiere of the Air Force’s Global Strike Command, who cited “personal and family reasons” for his departure. This announcement came shortly after Gen. David Alvin, head of the Air Force, also declared an early retirement, as noted by Defense News.
These retirements follow a series of abrupt firings in August, which included Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, Vice Adm. Nancy Lacore of the Navy Reserve, and Rear Adm. Milton Sands of the Naval Special Warfare Command. The dismissals were reported by Military Times.
Lt. Gen. Kruse’s agency had earlier generated an intelligence assessment regarding U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, which leaked and contradicted the Trump administration’s statements. This assessment was highlighted by Military Times.
Earlier in President Trump’s administration, a significant reshuffle occurred, with the firing of Air Force Gen. CQ Brown Jr. as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, alongside other senior officers, as documented by Military Times.
