Indonesia Chooses Italian M-346 Jets for Training and Combat Operations

In a strategic move to modernize its air fleet, Indonesia has opted for the Italian M-346 aircraft, marking a significant update in its military capabilities. This announcement was made by Leonardo, the manufacturer of the M-346, during the Singapore Airshow.

Indonesia is reportedly planning to acquire 24 of these jets, which will serve as replacements for its older Hawk aircraft. Specifically, the Indonesian Ministry of Defense has chosen the M-346 F Block 20 variant, known for its dual use as a light fighter and trainer jet.

The collaboration between Indonesia and Leonardo is further cemented by a Letter of Intent signed with PT ESystem Solutions Indonesia and the Indonesian Ministry of Defence. This agreement focuses on the procurement and support of the aircraft to fulfill the operational needs of the Indonesian Air Force, encompassing maintenance, overhaul, and pilot training.

Leonardo stated that the next phase will involve further discussions aimed at finalizing a procurement contract in the near future. The M-346 F Block 20 configuration is enhanced with several advanced features, including a Large Area Display, active electronically scanned radar, a Link 16 data-link, electronic countermeasures, and upgraded weapons systems.

Originally designed as a trainer jet, the M-346 has been successfully integrated into the air forces of several countries, including Italy, Singapore, Israel, Poland, Qatar, and Greece. The enhanced trainer-light fighter version has also been sold to Turkmenistan, Nigeria, and more recently to Austria, which ordered 12 units in December.

The fighter variant of the M-346 is equipped with seven external hard points, allowing it to carry a variety of munitions and targeting pods, which are compatible with Helmet Mounted Displays. This adaptability makes it a versatile option for air forces seeking to enhance both training and combat capabilities.
