Poland to Collaborate with Shield AI on Autonomous Fighter Jet Program

Poland’s Potential Role in Shield AI’s Cutting-Edge Fighter Jet Program

Poland may soon become a pivotal player in the production of advanced defense technology, as California-based Shield AI offers the nation a stake in its revolutionary X-BAT autonomous fighter jet program. This initiative could see part of the aircraft’s manufacturing take place within Polish borders, a prospect recently highlighted by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw on June 16, Tusk emphasized the ambitious nature of the program, stating, “Their intention is to also cooperate with Poland, and to produce in Poland, for the X-BAT program, the first autonomous combat aircraft in the world. It’s top-tier technology, a chance for air domination in case of an armed conflict, and an incredibly ambitious project with regard to technology and innovativeness.”

Unveiled by Shield AI in October 2025, the X-BAT is an AI-driven unmanned fighter jet known for its capability to take off and land vertically. It is designed for operations in challenging environments, offering significant advantages for both expeditionary and maritime scenarios.

According to Shield AI, the key to X-BAT’s functionality lies in its Hivemind software. This AI-powered autonomy allows the platform to perform in environments where communication may be compromised, collaborating with manned aircraft and executing strategies independently. The company states, “Hivemind enables X-BAT to autonomously penetrate contested battlespace, dynamically team with manned aircraft, and execute collaborative tactics without constant communications.”

This development comes as Poland evaluates its military expansion options, including the acquisition of up to 32 new fighter jets. Among the contenders are Lockheed Martin’s F-35, the Eurofighter Typhoon, and Boeing’s F-15EX.

Simultaneously, Poland is contemplating participation in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a tri-nation initiative involving Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom to develop a sixth-generation fighter jet. Polish Deputy State Assets Minister Konrad Gołota has indicated that the government is assessing the potential benefits of engaging its defense sector in this project to enhance the industry’s capabilities and innovation.

Founded in 2015, Shield AI is a venture-backed enterprise specializing in defense technology. Beyond the X-BAT and Hivemind, the company also offers products like the V-BAT drone.
