U.S. Air Force Awards Boeing Sole-Source Contract for New Bunker-Busters

U.S. Air Force Secures New Bunker-Buster Bombs from Boeing

The U.S. Air Force has taken a significant step in enhancing its strategic capabilities by awarding Boeing an exclusive contract to produce advanced bunker-buster bombs. These new munitions are set to replace those used in the June strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, ensuring the Air Force remains equipped for future challenges.

The decision to grant Boeing a sole-source contract was detailed in a justification notice released online. According to the Air Force, Boeing is the only manufacturer of the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a crucial factor in avoiding what the service describes as “unacceptable delays” that could compromise military readiness.

“This action is essential to restore operational readiness … and ensure Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) possesses the necessary assets to support strategic contingency war plans for all Combatant Commands,” stated the justification notice.

The Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) is a formidable 30,000-pound guided bomb, designed to obliterate fortified or subterranean targets, including underground laboratories and enemy bunkers. Its robust steel casing allows it to penetrate approximately 200 feet of solid rock or dense material before unleashing its powerful conventional payload.

In a recent mission, these MOPs were deployed from B-2 Spirit stealth bombers to target Iran’s Fordo nuclear enrichment facility, demonstrating their effectiveness in real-world scenarios.

While the precise cost of the new GBU-57 contract remains undisclosed, an indication suggests it will exceed $100 million. This procurement will include additional tail kits to enhance the precision of MOPs and all-up-round weapon system components, with deliveries scheduled to commence in January 2028.
